Commemorating the 50th anniversary of the 25th of April, the Cascais Experimental Theatre (TEC) is presenting a cycle of texts banned by Censorship. “The Night of the Assassins”, by José Triana, is a revolutionary text that TEC produced in 1973, directed by Jorge Listopad, and which never made it to the stage because it was banned on the day of the dress rehearsal. This is also a way of honouring the performers of the time: Maria do Céu Guerra, Manuela de Freitas and Sinde Filipe, as well as the director Jorge Listopad, and all the artists who had to keep quiet in the face of Censorship.
An important work by Cuban playwright José Triana, the story takes us back to 1950 in Cuba, before the 1959 Revolution, when three brothers, Cuca, Beba and Lalo, meet in the attic of their house to stage the murder of their own parents. At first reading, this is a dramatic metaphor for the climate in that country, centred on the generational conflict between parents and children. For TEC, this metaphor connects more deeply to more universal and current contexts, where in an unstable and chaotic world, three brothers fight for their survival locked in a space, through role-playing games.
