The opera “Madama Butterfly” had several versions before its premiere in 1907, the one that is commonly performed today. It’s a tragic work, climaxed by a suicide, which centres on Cio-Cio-San, a fifteen-year-old Japanese girl who is seduced and abandoned by an American naval officer passing through the Orient. The title role is one of the most complex and exhilarating in the history of opera and requires an exceptional vocal range from its interpreter, capable of translating states of true despair in a powerful way and, at the same time, moulding herself to environments of delicate fragility.
This new production recovers a beautiful wardrobe purposely made in Japan for a production that was staged at the São Carlos National Theatre in the 1970s.
