Synopsis: Takumi and his daughter Hana live in a village near Tokyo in a modest way and in harmony with the cycles of nature. But a project to build a glamping park – luxury camping – threatens to destabilise the community, interfering with the water supply and profoundly unbalancing the lives of those who live there.
An allegory about the price we pay for disrespecting nature, “The Evil Is Not Here” conveys a familiar message, but one whose impact here is tremendous. The filmmaker’s sweeping visual language is matched by the irresistibly beautiful soundtrack by Eiko Ishibashi, who worked with Hamaguchi on the Oscar-winning Drive My Car.
