Written and directed by Roberto Pereira, in ‘Insónia’ Fernando Mendes will be playing the role of Custódio Reis, a wine and liquor salesman who lives on a shoestring. Both financially and family-wise. He’s your average middle-class Portuguese, drowning in debt and credit. Custódio is on the verge of divorce. His wife, Sónia, has run out of patience with a husband who is increasingly a loser and a guy with no direction or major goals in life beyond eating, drinking and sleeping.
In fact, he’s a guy with no great intellectual depth and no great philosophical theses. On the other hand, he’s resourceful and has a salesman’s lip. The typical café Portuguese who talks about everything without saying much.
One night, Custódio, who has always been too lazy to think much about his life, stops to think and, instead of spending the night snoring, as is his habit, he can’t sleep. He has a terrible insomnia. An insomnia in which he questions everything in his life and tries to find solutions. We then witness a hilarious inner crisis that Custódio will go through in real time in an attempt to achieve the peace of mind he needs to get back to sleep…
