África Lunar e Solar is an exhibition that brings together two masters of Portuguese art, Cruzeiro Seixas and José de Guimarães, in an artistic dialogue that explores their deep connection with the African continent. The exhibition highlights the duality of their approaches: the intimate and dreamlike dimension of Cruzeiro Seixas, associated with the lunar night, and the vibrant and ritualistic celebration of José de Guimarães, illuminated by the African sun.
The exhibition reveals two different perspectives on the African influence in the work of both artists:
CRUZEIRO SEIXAS, a central figure in Portuguese surrealism, through a lunar Africa, marked by mystery, dreams and the unconscious. During his time in Angola, he was deeply influenced by the geography and local narratives, which moulded his visual and poetic work.
JOSÉ DE GUIMARÃES, internationally renowned artist, through a solar Africa, full of rhythm and vitality, with a visual language rich in colour and symbolism. Fascinated by tribal art and African rituals, the artist has built up a vocabulary that incorporates masks, ritual elements and geometric or organic shapes.
This duality between night and day, imagination and celebration, complements each other in a visual journey that celebrates the timeless power of African art and legacy.
África Lunar e Solar also marks the beginning of a partnership between the Portuguese Screen Printing Centre and Espaço Bruaá no Cae, which will represent the PSC in the Central region of the country.
