The ship “Sea Witch” was one of the first “Clippers”, with her charter taking place on 8 December 1846.
Designed for speed over cargo capacity, she was to carry china and tea from China to the East Coast of the United States. In 1849 she completed the journey between Hong Kong and New York in 77 days, a sailing record that would only be broken in 2003. It belonged to an era that saw the birth of photography, yet it was not a time characterised by the existence of marine photographic images, if we exclude the work of Gustave Le Gray in the 1850s.
