In collaboration with Sociedade Filarmónica Dez de Agosto, the Camélias de São João do Vale will make their debut on the night of São João (23rd, at 21h30).
The premiere will take place during the festival that is being planned for the typical Largo de São João do Vale, as was the case last year. It is worth remembering that the area of the Valley, in not so distant times, was the centre of many recreational, musical and associative activities. “Vale, Mato and Pinhal are all pieces of Portugal”, as the lyrics of a popular figueirense song say.
The feast, organised by Dez de Agosto, known as “a Teimosa”, consists of a popular dance, poetry, folklore, grilled sardines, barbecues and a kermesse.
The new São João do Vale Ranch is rehearsing twice a week at the Dez de Agosto headquarters and has a base of six to eight pairs, five “mascots”, a toccata with various musicians including two accordions, one alto sax, one clarinet, one reco-reco, one bombo and one cavaquinho. The new rancho, whose rehearsal leader is António Cruz, seeks to bring to the present day the repertoire of the famous ranches that once existed in old Figueira, such as Ranchos do Vapor, Rosas and Carvoeiras.
